That&#8217;s what I served over a decade ago at one of my sister&#8217;s birthdays at the <strong>Caribbean Social Club<\/strong> in Brooklyn, also known as \u201cTo\u00f1ita&#8217;s,\u201c after the matriarch of <strong>one of the last social clubs in all of New York City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plateapr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Gracias-a-mi-terapista-Rene-por-el-amable-gesto-de-traerme-el-jugo-natural-de-remolacha-y-peregil.-Muy-rico-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22202\" style=\"width:422px;height:527px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>@tonitasny, Instagram <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>With its chinchorro vibe, its worn-out pool table<\/strong>, domino tables, and a jukebox that plays FANIA and Bad Bunny alike, To\u00f1ita has spent over four decades bringing together diverse generations from varied backgrounds\u2014Puerto Ricans first, then Latinos and their allies\u2014under one roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Bad Bunny sang the line <strong>\u201ca shot of ca\u00f1ita at To\u00f1ita&#8217;s place and PR feels so close,<\/strong>\u201c in his song &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Bad-bunny-nuevayol-lyrics\">Nueva Yol<\/a>&#8221; and seated her in the front row on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Mar\u00eda Antonia Cay, &#8220;To\u00f1ita,&#8221; was already known as the patron saint of Boricua culture in Brooklyn&#8217;s diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her name had already appeared in documentaries, interviews, and in stories about celebrities like Madonna, Rauw Alejandro, and J Balvin, among many others who have stopped by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"pocillo-newsletter\" \n    id=\"pocillo-newsletter-block_818c2c877971315cd66745c39788f1af\"\n    data-block-title=\"Por lo bueno de Puerto Rico\"\n    data-block-description=\"Lo mejor de la isla. For many years, Los Sures became a <strong>vibrant Puerto Rican community<\/strong>, a piece of Puerto Rico outside the island, where culture bloomed on every corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plateapr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/tbt-@residente-en-@tonitasny-_Repost-@residente_._El-boricueo-en-los-niuyores-R-The-puerto-ricanness-in-NY-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22203\" style=\"width:724px;height:480px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>@tonitasny, Instagram<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To\u00f1ita was only 15 years old when she arrived in the neighborhood. She spent 20 years working in a skirt factory, saving her chavitos to bring her family from the island. From its beginnings, To\u00f1ita hasn&#8217;t just run a club\u2014she&#8217;s created a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sundays and certain days, she cooks for whoever needs it, free of charge. And you just go and serve yourself a plate of arroz con habichuelas, grab a Medalla (that one you pay for) without questions, without conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her generosity is legendary, and her space has served as a gathering point for both established and emerging artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the recent migration caused by Puerto Rico&#8217;s economic crisis, the club <strong>served as a refuge for a new generation of Boricuas<\/strong> who timidly knocked on its doors. I didn&#8217;t dare go in because it was full of ballplayers and seniors, and he told me &#8216;let&#8217;s go in.&#8217; \ud83e\udd23 The rest is history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n       <\/div>\n       <div class=\"traveler-quote__name\">\n            \n       <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even back then, the Caribbean Social Club served as a cultural space that united generations and celebrated Boricua pride in a special way. Raquel is part of a lineage of artists that also includes other indie acts like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CUpsopIAg5I\/?igsh=MXRvZmpxdXlocG02Zw%3D%3D\">Musara\u00f1a<\/a> and even painters like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C74DIbaANJX\/?igsh=MTIwdHZwYnp3emlnZQ%3D%3D\">Bobby Cruz<\/a>, who found inspiration and support under To\u00f1ita&#8217;s roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>To\u00f1ita and Bad Bunny: Two Wings of the Same Bird<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are echoes of everything To\u00f1ita represents in Bad Bunny&#8217;s work, particularly in his most recent album, <em>Deb\u00ed Tirar M\u00e1s Fotos<\/em>. Just like To\u00f1ita, Benito has created a space where people and surroundings have to adapt to him, not the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"content-divider content-divider--dashed\">\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">In his music, you can feel that unbreakable pride and spirit of resistance\u2014that \u201cI am who I am and I don&#8217;t care what anyone thinks\u201c\u2014that has run through To\u00f1ita&#8217;s veins for decades.<\/h4>\n\n\n<hr class=\"content-divider content-divider--dashed\">\n\n\n\n<p>And now <strong>Bad Bunny honors this icon by presenting her to the world<\/strong>. With this, he&#8217;s not only putting To\u00f1ita on a global stage, but speaking directly to the audience that is central to both of them: Boricuas, Latinos, and their allies.
