These five museums are a good starting point for your next trip around the Island.
While you enjoy these spaces full of history and interesting pieces, you can collect commemorative stamps from your visit, in both the physical passport and its digital version. You can also work toward becoming an Embajador D'Aquí as you accumulate those stamps.
There is always something for our coffee-loving followers. In Ciales you will find the Museo del Café de Puerto Rico, conveniently located on the Paseo Aroma de Café. Take in some of the history of coffee on the Island, from vintage machinery to production tools, and finish your visit by ordering a small cup of coffee at the coffee bar. You can also buy a bag of coffee at the shop.
Steps from the public plaza in Cayey, there is a story to tell in every corner of the Casa Histórica de la Música Cayeyana. It has a little of everything: pieces and instruments of great historical value, accounts of the careers of key figures in Puerto Rican popular music, both natives of Cayey and those the town adopted, and one of the best views of the plaza and the mountains of the well-known Ciudad de las Brumas.
Juana Díaz has been leading the Santos Reyes tradition for nearly 140 years, and for the past 20 it has been home to the first thematic museum dedicated to the figures of Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar. This tradition began with the visit of Padre Valentín Echevarría to the Ciudad del Jacaguas in 1884. Since then, residents of Juana Díaz and Puerto Ricans across the Island have kept alive the magic, wonder and innocence that these wise men of the East inspire.
On the plaza in Guayama you will find the Museo Casa Cautiño, an impressive residence commissioned by the Cautiño family, designed by Guayama native don Manuel Texidor, and featuring elements of neoclassicism and the Creole architecture of the southern region. Also, according to what we were told on the tour, this museum is possibly the only one in Puerto Rico with 99% of its original pieces still in place.
The tobacco tradition is still alive in Puerto Rico, and in Caguas you can find the only museum dedicated to the subject. Learn the history of this plant, which is native to the Americas and arrived in Puerto Rico during European colonization. The Island once had tobacco workshops, known as chinchorros or chinchales, where tobacco leaves were processed and cigars were made. Today you can watch the creation of the El Sabrosito brand cigar through glass windows inside the museum.
