Campechada 2024: Schedules, stages and where to park

Janet Rodríguez

Campechada returns to the San Juan area, this time along avenidas Juan Ponce de León and José De Diego and calles Del Parque and Antonsanti, in Santurce.

The event, taking place Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024, promises a cultural celebration in honor of the late educator and theater producer Victoria Espinosa.

What is Campechada?

Campechada is a cultural event that brings together artists, artisans, and public and private organizations dedicated to the arts, culture and conservation, as well as people working in music, theater, literature, body art, gastronomy, fashion design and the visual arts.

The first Campechada began in November 2011 as a celebration of the life and work of José Campeche. Since then, editions have been dedicated to figures such as Francisco Oller, Rafael Tufiño and Lola Rodríguez de Tió.

Cultural programming

Campechada 2024 will include artisans, partner organizations, creative industries, booksellers, academic talks, gastronomy, visual artists and theaters from the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña.

It will also feature three main stages, four theaters with special programming and themed stations.

El Cue

The Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (ICP) announced that it will hold for the first time a performing arts convention called El Cue on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Sala Sinfónica Pablo Casals of the Centro de Bellas Artes de Santurce.

On both days, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., there will be talks, artistic presentations and a music, theater and dance market.

The convention will address topics related to the performing arts industry and will encourage participants to connect and build new contacts.

El Cue aims to serve as a showcase for emerging and independent artists in music, theater and dance. The initiative will take place simultaneously with Campechada 2024.

To take part in El Cue, you can register for free through the platform or in person at the Sala Sinfónica starting at 10:00 a.m.

Tours and street programming

During Campechada 2024, attendees can join various tours, including Resistencia Cangrejera, led by professor Jaime Pérez; Propiedades de Valor Histórico en la Parada 23, organized by the ICP; and the Ruta Victoria Espinosa with Isla Caribe, among others. There will also be marching bands, living statues and comparsas (costumed carnival troupes). See the full list of tours and street programming here.

How many stations are there?

The six themed stations, named after elements of the theater world, such as Proscenio, Libreto and Matiné, will feature appearances by the Coro de Niños de San Juan, Ciudad Museo and Chicle. You can also learn to make creative puppets, design theater posters and experience theater through dramatic readings.

Here is the full schedule.
