The 2024 Festival Color Caribe highlights a new wave of Puerto Rican artists

Luis Alfaro Pérez

Imagine being surrounded by enormous murals, painted by some of the most recognized artists in the world, in the middle of a living whirlwind of art, culture and Caribbean music, amid vast greenery and the aromas of Puerto Rican cooking.

That is the experience of Color Caribe, a festival that will draw thousands to the Agroturístico El Dorado park over the next two weekends. Ahead of its fourth edition, it has transformed El Dorado into the only open-air art park in Puerto Rico.

A space unlike any other in Puerto Rico

Across 54 cuerdas of land, 13 murals measuring 20 to 45 feet will be on display, illustrating the colors, folklore and memories of the Caribbean. Under this theme, internationally and locally recognized artists are invited to a celebration that drew more than 50,000 visits in 2022. Today, it is a major platform for enjoying Caribbean art and planting the seed of art in young people.

"It's a family event where everyone can come to enjoy themselves and learn about art. This is a platform not only for muralists but also for musicians in the independent scene […]. It works so that many of these talents who are just starting out can reach a large audience," Joel Díaz, the event's co-producer, told Platea about the event's success.

Free admission and broader access to Caribbean art

As a music festival, it has brought in new artists from every genre. This year, 25 acts will perform on its stage. Unlike other music festivals, however, Color Caribe has free admission. This year, though, you will need to register in advance here to secure your spot.

Díaz explained that this has contributed to the event's growth, but noted that they had always sought to make art accessible to more people and to educate the public about Puerto Rico's most recognized muralists.

"The festival has been free from the start in order to reach as many people as possible, so they could learn about Puerto Rican artists […]. Many of these artists are recognized by people outside Puerto Rico," he said. He added that Color Caribe has elevated local muralism in recent years, alongside events such as Yaucromatic, Santurce es Ley and the Grito del Arte.

Art with purpose: for the next generation of artists

Among murals and trees, El Dorado is an open-air gallery where anyone can bring their family and pets, sit down with a blanket and even enjoy art classes, live painting demonstrations and other live art presentations. All of this artistic activity serves the festival's larger purpose: nurturing a new generation of Puerto Rican artists.

One of the festival's partnerships ensures that students from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño serve as assistants to each muralist. To benefit the students, Color Caribe always selects artists whose styles are distinctive and varied.

"We rotate them among each of the artists so they can learn from each one's technique […]. This gives these students the opportunity to work alongside the artists they admire," Díaz said, adding that the university offers academic credits to students for the experience.

Looking ahead: other municipalities, outside Puerto Rico?

Díaz did not rule out the possibility of holding the event in other towns on the island if a municipality approached them. He emphasized, however, that the event needs to take place in green, safe, open-air spaces. In particular, the murals must be able to remain permanently on site.

The organizers are certain they want to expand the festival to other parts of Puerto Rico, and especially to other Latin American countries and the United States. In that way, Color Caribe aims to build a bridge connecting Puerto Rican artists with the rest of the world.

"The Caribbean is a cradle of incredible talent […]. This helps Puerto Rican artists go out to paint at other festivals as well," the co-producer explained.

For now, the organizers will continue holding the event at Parque Agroturístico El Dorado, welcoming all admirers of muralism and young people passionate about pursuing art as a career and vocation.
